If a village is known as the Little Portuguese Tibet, it means that we are looking at a very special place. This is the case of the village of Sistelo, in Gerês, which, among mountains, country lanes and forests, delights all lovers of the trails of Portugal. 
 

Port Wine Trail – Lamego.

Distance: 8 km
With its terraces covered in lush green vineyards, the Douro Valley landscape is world famous, with the Alto Douro Wine Region being a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. It is therefore no surprise that walking this trail is an unforgettable experience of beauty at any time of the year. Paiva Walkways – Arouca.

Distance: 9 km

Located on the left bank of the river that gives them their name, the Paiva Walkways have quickly become one of the most visited trails in Portugal. Between descents of rough waters and stunning natural scenery, you can discover emblematic places such as the Garganta do Paiva, the Vau River Beach, the Gola do Salto, the Aguieiras Waterfall and the Falha do Espiunca. 

Magical Village of Drave – Regoufe.

Distance: 8 km

Drave has a special place on the list of the best trails in Portugal. Between the Serra da Freita and the Serra de S. Macário, this uninhabited schist village has an aura of magic only matched by the nature that surrounds it.  And although the trail is not the easiest, the view from the top shows that the effort was well worth it. If you visit in the summer, take a swimsuit and don't miss the opportunity to cool off on the Palhais river.

Bussaco Forest Trail – Luso.

Distance: 6.5 km

Garganta de Loriga Route – Serra da Estrela.

Distance: 9 km
Among our suggestions for trails in Portugal, we couldn't miss the Garganta de Loriga Route, which links the upper plateau of the Serra da Estrela with the town of Loriga. The Covões do Boleiro, do Meio, da Nave and da Areia, the Vale Glaciar de Loriga, the Eira da Pedra and the Covão de Meio dam are just some of the places you'll be able to visit in a truly majestic natural setting. 

Levada Route – Serra da Lousã.

Distance: 7 km
Considered one of the most beautiful trails in Portugal, the Levada Route fascinates with its beauty and diversity. As you walk along this trail, you'll be able to see a levada that is still in operation, walk through leafy oak and chestnut forests. But you can also visit the schist villages of Cerdeira and Candal, discover a refreshing waterfall, take a dip in the natural pools of Senhora da Piedade and, if you're lucky, even spot a fox or a deer.
 

Orvalho GeoRoute – Orvalho Walkways – Oleiros.

Distance: 9 km
The Naturtejo Geopark is home to one of the best trails in Portugal, which has recently gained notoriety due to the construction of the Orvalho Walkways. Following the Orvalho GeoRoute, you will cross all the walkways and see several geomonuments classified by UNESCO, such as the Fraga de Água d’Alta waterfall and Cabeço do Mosqueiro. All this with the added benefit of some of the most beautiful landscapes in Beira Baixa.

Conhal Trails – Nisa.

Distance: 10 km

Starting in the town of Arneiro, this hiking trail heads towards the Serra de S. Mamede, where you can take a short detour to visit Buraca da Faiopa, a disused iron mine. The trail continues towards Castelo de Rodão, where you can watch vultures flying overhead, ending on a high note in Conhal, where gold was mined in Roman and medieval times. 

Marvão Trails – Portagem.

Distance: 7 km
The Serra de São Mamede Natural Park is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes and best trails in Portugal. The highlights of this hiking trail are the town of Marvão and its castle, the 16th-century bridge over the Sever River, the old Portagem Tower and the incredible panoramic views over the Serra Selada, Alto de São Mamede and the quartz ridges of the Galegos border. 

Mértola Trails - Monte das Pias.

Distance: 6 km
The historic town of Mértola, located in the heart of the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, is the starting point for exploring this unmissable region in the south. Although there are 10 hiking trails in this municipality, one of the most popular is the one that crosses the rugged schist lands of the wild Guadiana to reach the famous Pulo do Lobo waterfall. 

Sete Vales Suspensos Trail – Lagoa.

Distance: 6 km
